core wardrobe: bias-cut garibaldi a-line skirt

Last year and this year, I shared a bit about the Hollywood Trousers I sewed for my core wardrobe. These trousers are staples in my wardrobe and continue to see regular use throughout the spring. As someone who isn’t fond of wearing trousers in the summer, I typically transition to skirts and shorts when the temperature rises. This preference might stem from my experience living in hot and humid Manhattan and now in drier yet equally warm Madrid. Trousers just don’t feel comfortable on my skin when it gets too hot. This year, alongside the trousers, I also made some bias-cut, pull-on Garibaldi Skirts. These skirts have become favorites and see a lot of wear. For the waistband, I followed this tutorial. Here’s a glimpse of one of those skirts:

The Garibaldi Skirts are something I expect to wear well into the summer. I made one in each of my four go-to colors: black, navy, camel, and cream. This allows me to create monochromatic outfits with my favorite sweaters, which is my preferred style, but also gives me the flexibility to mix and match. They also pair beautifully with other wardrobe staples. Both these skirts and trousers are the most frequently worn items in my closet, making getting dressed effortless. My daily decision boils down to whether I want to wear a skirt or trousers and in which color. From there, I usually throw on a white T-shirt under one of my sweaters, sometimes add a Classic Shirt, and top it off with a blazer or scarf if needed. This is what my core wardrobe looks like: approximately 20 pieces. While I don’t wear these items exclusively, they form the foundation of my wardrobe. When traveling, I can pack light by focusing on these versatile pieces. For those of you who enjoy prints and colors, sticking to a few key colors can still help you build a core wardrobe. I do experiment more with prints and patterns during spring and summer, so stay tuned for that! As a clothing designer, I naturally wear more than just these basics, but these are the items I reach for most often. My approach to packing light while traveling has been simplified by focusing on these pieces and their versatility. Stay tuned for more colorful and printed options for warmer weather!
