my favorite oliver + s pattern: hopscotch skirt, knit top + dress

We're thrilled to welcome Elizabeth back to our community! Last year, she shared her Project Run & Play creations featuring Oliver + S patterns during her visit. Today, she's here to introduce us to her beloved Oliver + S pattern. Over to you, Elizabeth!

Hello everyone! My name is Elizabeth, and I share my sewing adventures on my blog, The College Seamstress. You can also connect with me on Instagram as @thecollegeseamstress. My journey into sewing began with quilting through 4-H when I was around 11 or 12. A few years later, I discovered the world of garment sewing and haven’t looked back since. I enjoy creating clothes not just for myself but also for my eight younger siblings.

When it comes to sewing for others, my two sisters are usually the lucky recipients—unless I’m working on something for myself. Back in 2010, I stumbled upon the Ice Cream Dress on several blogs, which introduced me to Oliver + S patterns. Although I admired their designs for quite some time, I didn’t buy one until later. The first pattern I tried from them was the School Bus T-shirt, and it quickly became a family favorite among my siblings.

I initially considered choosing the School Bus T-shirt as my favorite Oliver + S pattern, but after reflecting, I realized that the Hopscotch Skirt has become my go-to lately. This versatile pattern allows for endless combinations to build a mix-and-match wardrobe. While I’ve experimented with different versions, I find myself returning to the classic skirt version again and again—it’s my sister’s absolute favorite!

One of the best parts of this pattern? The pockets! They add such a delightful touch while providing functionality. My sister adores having pockets in her skirts, so they’re always a hit.

Sometimes, though, I need a faster project, especially when donating skirts to organizations like Skirting the Issue. For these instances, I omit the buttons and pockets by cutting the skirt and waistband pieces on the fold. The result? A simple yet charming skirt that still looks fantastic. Here are two examples of modified skirts I made this way:

Recently, I crafted a chambray version of the skirt with pink buttons. Using understated fabrics paired with bold accents creates a unique look every time. Buttons truly transform the entire outfit!

So far, I’ve mainly used cotton and lightweight fabrics for this skirt, but I’ve got some corduroy fabric waiting for colder weather. Lightweight denim could be another exciting option to explore!

Besides the skirt, I’ve also experimented with the shirt and dress variations of the Hopscotch pattern for my sister. I’m eager to create more tops using this design—they feature a gorgeous crossover neckline and a gathered front that adds charm.

In conclusion, the Hopscotch skirt remains one of my sister’s favorites to wear and mine to make. It’s an excellent foundational pattern that can easily transition from casual to formal settings depending on how it’s styled.

Thank you so much for inviting me to share today!
