Hello everyone! My name is Elizabeth, and I share my sewing adventures over at The College Seamstress. You can also connect with me on Instagram @thecollegeseamstress. My journey into sewing began when I was around 11 or 12, learning the art of quilting through my local 4-H program. A few years later, I discovered the world of garment sewing, and it completely captivated me. Sewing clothes for myself and my eight younger siblings has become my passion.
When I'm not sewing for myself, my two sisters are usually the lucky recipients of my projects. Back in 2010, I stumbled upon the Ice Cream Dress on several blogs, which introduced me to the Oliver + S patterns. For quite some time, I admired their designs before finally purchasing one. The first pattern I tried was the School Bus T-shirt, and it quickly became a household favorite for both my brothers and sisters.
Initially, I considered choosing the School Bus T-shirt as my favorite pattern. However, as I reflected on my sewing experiences, I realized that the Hopscotch Skirt pattern has truly stolen my heart. It's incredibly versatile, allowing for endless combinations to create a mix-and-match wardrobe. While I’ve experimented with different versions, I’ve made the skirt iteration the most, and it remains my absolute favorite to sew for my sister.

The highlight of this skirt pattern is undoubtedly the pockets. They’re not only functional but also add a playful touch to the design. My sister adores pockets in her skirts, so these always bring her joy.

Sometimes, though, I seek a quicker project. In those instances, I omit the buttons and pockets entirely. By cutting the skirt and waistband fronts on the fold, the process becomes even simpler. This streamlined version still results in a charming skirt, as seen in the two I recently made for donation to Skirting the Issue.

Recently, I created a chambray version of the skirt adorned with pink buttons. I enjoy pairing simple fabrics with pops of color through accessories like buttons—these small details can transform the entire look.
Though I’ve primarily used cotton and lightweight fabrics for this pattern, I’ve been eyeing some corduroy fabrics for the colder seasons ahead. Lightweight denim could also make an exciting addition.
While the skirt is my favorite iteration, I’ve also dabbled in the shirt and dress versions for my sister. She particularly enjoys the crossover neckline and gathered front of the top. I’m eager to continue creating more tops using this pattern.

The Hopscotch Skirt has earned its place as one of my sister’s favorites to wear and mine to sew. It’s a timeless pattern that can effortlessly transition from casual to formal settings.
